Organization: Colored Pens
Why You Need Colored Pens To Organize Your Life ASAP
Have you ever looked went to review a page full of important notes, but it looks like one big blur that is hard to pick apart? Well, same.. I am guilty of writing so much without being able to refer back to those notes efficiently. I use color coded sticky notes to differentiate different task categories, so I thought why can't I do the same with colored pens?
How I Use Colored Pens In My Planner
When it comes to planning out my days and keeping track of my crazy personal life, I could never track everything accurately and that is where color coding came in. I wrote a list of the different categories that were frequent in my life. For example: Blue was doctor appointments, Pink was for personal plans (Like dates, dinner parties, and weddings), Green for bills, purple for birthdays and so on. Once I established the colors I wrote each category in their respective colors at the front of my planner for reference. The first color I wrote out was blue for birthdays so I could make sure I didn't plan any events on those days and could write reminders to buy gifts if I needed to. Next was go through my appointments and personal days so I could make sure no time overlapped. Lastly I used green to write which bill and the amount on the day it was due so I could double check I paid, or that direct deposit was set up.
Other than just writing events, I also used the colors to micromanage all aspects of my life including a daily, weekly, and monthly checklist. If you are like me, I need to call doctors or inquire about personal things once the business day is over, so I started created a to do list for the next day by priority. By no means do I create a checklist every night before bed, but when things come up it is an easy reminder.
Color coding my planner helped me write less yet still quickly review my schedule every week. I travel often for work and saving time is everything for me. This specific plan may not work for you, but I encourage trying a different plan every week with the colors. Color coding may not work for you, but if you are busy it is definitely worth a shot!
Color Coding My Notes
In high school I never thought I would use a notebook again, then I went to college and used more notebooks in one month than I did in a year previously, and once I got to my first job out of college I realize note taking would be with me for the rest of my life so I had to learn to take them well. I use my colored pens to help break up my notes so they are easier to digest and refer to when I needed them in a few weeks. I don't have specific colors for specific categories, but I do write subheadings in different colors. For example, I will write notes from one meeting and title them Meeting One in Red, then the next meeting title it in Green so I can easily flip through my notes. I also used colors to draw out objects if needed, highlight important processes, and to highlight tasks I will need to complete later on.
Conclusion
Using colored coded pens didn't save world hunger or turn me into a millionaire, but it definitely helps me stay sane. I personally get stressed easily and most of my life I have always been a mess and scatterbrained. These small things help me save time and keep my ducks in a row, which helps me become a better over all employee, friend and homemaker. I hope these small tips and inexpensive colored pens make as much of a difference on your life as they did mine.
Happy Color Coding!
